The causes were almost the same for most explorers. Gold, god, and glory were the main 3. Everybody wanted gold. You needed it to get by and just b/c you wanted it. By discovering new lands, the discoveres and the sponserers would get money made from the new worlds. The discoverers in return for this, would be getting recognition(glory). They would rank higher and get money. As for god, they explored to spread the word of God and convert the natives of the land to Christianity.

You could also add that Marco Polo and the account of his journeys to the East ignited a sense of curiosity in Europeans. They began to try to find alternate ways of reaching the East, however, (b/c of conflicts with the Turks and such) namely the sea.

The motives and causes were interesting. The God Glory Gold is interesting because it sums up the Spanish goals: take Catholicism to the indigenous peoples (no matter if they wanted it or not) glory for themselves (oops better make sure God is there so you don't go to Hell) and gold for the country because it was all about mercantilism

The three causes were "god, glory, and gold". Glory comes from the desire of the Conquistadors for personal glory and recognition. The governments also wanted the glory of being the people to introduce "civilization" to the natives. God comes from the desire of the Conquistadors, explorers, and the governments that sponsored them to spread Catholicism to the natives. Gold is the most obvious cause. Every explorer was in the business of making money. Governments wanted gold because of their desire to be the "richest" by acquiring more bullion from outside sources as well as land for natural resources that they could exploit. Gold also comes from the land because in some cases countries were looking for a population outlet.

Odiraa, the God Glory God is not a cause but a vehicle of the AOD in Spain. You are getting caught up with the immediate events that ushered in the AOD.

What about the Portuguese? British? French AOD's? The political, economic, technological and social changes are the underlying, LONG TERM causes of the AOD.

The four causes of the Age of Discovery were technology, economic, political, and social. Technology played an important part od the AOD because of the invention of the compass by the Chinese. The compass allowed explorers or sailors to travel the open sea with the knowledge of their direction. the astrolab showed the sailors where they were in the lines of laditude on a clear night. New ships were bring made with v shaped hulls making hte ships faster. Ships had triangular sails letting them go into the wind. Economically there were joint stock companies meaning that investors felt more safe putting their waelth in there because they wouldn't rick everything. Mercantilism to serve the mother country brought raw materials and produced more bullion. A political cause was the ability to form a nation-state. In creating this the monarchies would expand. Socially, there was the end of serfdom that caused the peasents to move or also known as urbanization.

The causes of the AOD were a combination of political, economic, social, religious, and technological reasons. The political reason was the formation of nation-states allowing the monarchs to unite resources to expand. The economic causes were the development of a money economy and the use of joint-stock companies. The money economy allowed artisans to make a profit, so they began to demand more goods. So the merchanst looked for a new route to Asia. The joint-stock companies allowed people to invest in exploration without worrying about the investment failing. The social cause was the end of serfdom causing urbanization. When their were no jobs in the cities of England the peasants began to become sailors and servants to survive. The technological causes were the development of the compass, astrolabe, and better ships. The compass showed directions, and the astrolabe gave the lines of latitude. The ships became better with the development of the axial rudder, triangular sails, and V-shaped hulls. The last reason though not as strong as the others was religious causes. There were some religions in the different countries that were not largely accepted in their mother country. For example, the Puritans, Catholics, and Quakers left their homeland to find a "safe haven" where they could have religious freedom. These were the different causes of the Age of Discovery.
