Women and the Isms

As discussed in class (February 9 and 10), women became an important demographic for any new ism to develop. The question I want you to ponder is: How did Liberalism and Socialism attract women to each movement? Which one seemed to provide women with a foundation of success?

When you answer, please use power thinking format as you answer. This will keep you from chasing rabbits.

Good luck :)

here we go...
The 18th century liberal and socialist movements were attractive to many downtrodden minorities, including women. Liberals believed in equal legal and social rights for all, which was attractive to feminists such as John Stuart Mill. Socialism represented a radical change in society, leaving a possibility for women to gain a more equal footing in the new order, as demonstrated in teh phalanstery established by Zoe Gatti de Gamond and the writings of Flora Tristan.

When thinking about how women have been passed over during the Modern Age, women seemed on the outside looking in. By the 19th century, women were seeking for an identity. The Bourgeois women were still traditional. They went from "dad's house to husband's house" with no sense of independence. Working class women experienced independencee in the work place and in living in urban areas. With illegitimacy increasing in the urban areas, proletariat women began to seek new answers that contrasted from traditions. By 1850, as utopianism died and utilitarianism began to offer a political perspective, the bourgeois and proletariat women began to unite. This is the ulitimate outcome of this pursuit of identity.

So basically, the women felt more.... included in the "isms" therefore they were more naturally drawn to it, feeling as if they were the "underdogs" persay, finally getting their chance...?
