The Scientific Revolution helped raise the Western Civilization because it allowed the Engish and other Western powers to become better at science. The Scientific Method and Ethics evolved during this time. Modern discoveries and exploration would not had of been possible without the discoveries made in the Scientific Revolution. Without the discoveries in the Revolution our cultures as they exist today would not be here most likely, due to the absence of vaccines and disease fighting medicines. Herbs can only go so far. Examples are, scientific method, Heliocentric model, discovery of gravity, the discovery of the laws of motion, modern medicine, and the disecting of the human body.
I disagree the scientific revolution is why we have so many problems with our environment. And most medicines nowadays are more harmful than helpful. Besides all treatment is part faith based. The only good thing that came out of the scientific revolution was the seperation of science and theology and the tolerance of scientific ideas in todays worlds-instead of burning them or throwing them in jail as heretics.
Whitwolfe, humanity would cause problems with or without the Scientific Revolution.
Yes, but the scientific revolution was an accelerant-like gasoline to a fire. Humans have been trying to control nature for centuries-in vain, and the environment is suffering for it. Without the sci.rev., people would have been more relunctant to break away from traditional Christian thiking-therefore the process would have been a lot slower. The technology of today may not have been created until thousands of years from now. Humanity and it's power seeking ways is a part, but tradition and the breaking away from such for advance is also a part and more important, I believe. It's timing.
People still need to learn that with knowledge comes great responsibility. However, most people are too blind/ignorant to see that with their conquests of power they're destroying the earth.
Whitfwolfe and Koalaqueen--what is greater--the modern advances on sciences or the evils unleashed by these advances?
I'm not sure, Was. They seem to be neck and neck. However, I feel that if the evils are not checked then only bad can come of the future advances in science. Maybe I'm just asking for something impossible-that's what it seems like.
On an off note-like my pic? I'm mighty Sailor Jupiter!!!
Sorry for ruining a serious discussion, Was-again, again, again.
So what you're saying, Guennie, is that we should overlook a medicine that can cause: blindness, clotting, stroke, heart attack, and death but could cure a cold? Yes, maybe sometime in the far off future there could be ways to deter the evils, but, judging by the trends of history, I'm thinking not anytime soon. It took centuries for "doctors" to realize that leeches weren't an effective medical treatment.
I don't understand what you're agreeing about, Ang. Could you clarify-help the slow?
I am a fanatic, Ang. Have you seen my blog?
If you want to argue over it being wrong I personally feel you are wrong (thankfully I am not in the old times, and therefore agianst the pope). To me science gave us the ability to see that we were harming the environment and that we need to clean it. The Scientific Revolution also showed us how to clean up what we did to the natural environment. Besides I will freely admit the Church needed to be questioned. Beside Whitwolfe you said something about in the future, I find that intersting as we should look at the long term benefits over the short term benefits. "The benefits of the many out way the benefits of the few." So it was just over 100 years ago we first flew an airplane as a people, and now we have people in space staring down on Earth we are completing the human genome in 100 I think we will be traveling to another world and we will be able to cure anything that harms humans, all due to the Scientific Revolution. Anti-Stem Cell Research group please do not begin to talk about the stoping of evolution. So, Whitwolfe I totally disagree with you.
I agree with Sledge (are you Nick by the way). The anti-bacterial proprties of the leeches in theory could work. The thing is in all other cases other than an infection and only in theory then it would be better to use the more recent discoveries to help treat the ailments
You don't neccessarily overdose for those symptoms.
I just don't have the faith in humanity with advanced science that you do, blazehurts. Yes, the advances are great and all especially in medicine because people will live longer but what about the future-perhaps the world will become overpopulated with people living longer lives because of those advances. War is still a problem also, and still will be for many years to come, and science will be undoubtedly used to develop new weapons-like Louis the XIV. Maybe. maybe not. if science is as great as you claim then maybe the possible cons can be neutralized. Then again, you ahve more faith in humanity armed with advanced science than I do.
On the subject of leeches, using them is like when your mother tells you to put warmth on a sore spot or when your grandparents tell you to put butter on a burn-it is a ridiculous "home remedy" that works a little of the time. Advances in medicine is why I don't totally disagree on the "greatness of science."
western civilization as we know it is at its peak-only to begin its downfall...
Yes, we know that, but his puns could use some work. I mean, what was with that "Hungary" one he used in class?
true, true
